A Multi-Analytical Approach for the Characterization of Painting Materials and Metal Soap Formation in Two Artworks by the Argentinian Painter Antonio Berni

This work describes the characterization of pigments and ground layers in two paintings by renowned Argentinian painter Antonio Berni (1905–1981). The studied are “Toledo” “Figure” from collection Provincial Museum Fine Arts Santa Fe (Argentina). To approach this goal, an integrated investigation comprising situ X-ray fluorescence measurements means a portable system (pXRF), micro-Raman spectroscopy, Attenuated Total Reflection–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive (SEM–EDS) was carried out. results revealed chromatic palette inorganic pigments, such as ultramarine blue, cobalt lead white, zinc yellow cadmium, hydrated chromium oxide (viridian), together preparation layer consisting mixture earth, calcite “Toledo”. On other hand, characterized lithopone, barium sulfate sulfide.
